WINGING PRIVATE LESSON

Wingfoiling combines the freedom of surfing, the strategy of sailing, and the sensation of flying. This private lesson is your entry point into the world of winging. You’ll start with focused land-based instruction and move to on-the-water coaching to learn how to handle the wing, position your body and board, and read the wind. Your instructor will tailor the session to your experience level, goals, and the conditions. Progress in wingfoiling is gradual but incredibly rewarding, and there are important skills to master before ever riding a foil. Even on lighter wind days, there’s plenty to practice: wing handling, balance, footwork, turns, and the fundamentals that make foiling possible later on. You’ll leave with practical skills you can use right away and a clear path forward on your wingfoiling journey.

What Will I Learn?

Private lessons are tailored to your background, goals, and the conditions. Wingfoiling is a progression-based sport. Early sessions focus on strong fundamentals before adding in the foil. Common topics include body mechanics, wing handling, applying wind/foil theory, pumping techniques, etc. As you progress, you will build toward riding a foil and learn to generate speed, maintain flight, and turn with control. You can become qualified to practice independently with our rental equipment so you can keep building between lessons.

Is this the right class for me?

Winging private lessons are a great entry-level option if you are curious about wingfoiling and want a clear, supported way to start building skills the right way. They are also a great fit if you want to become eligible to rent winging equipment from MBAC. Winging is a physically demanding sport, but the skills you learn are designed to help you outsmart the wind and equipment rather than outmuscle them. The biggest muscle you will use is your brain. Prior windsport or surfing experience can help accelerate the learning process, but it is not required.

Requirements

  • Winging Private Lesson is an entry-level class with no required prerequisites or prior experience.
  • This class is open to all participants aged 14 and up.
  • Helmets are required to be worn when using an MBAC foil.
  • A general liability waiver is required to participate. Anyone under 18 must have a waiver signed by their parent or legal guardian.
  • Participants must acknowledge that they are water-safe (able to swim 50 meters and comfortably tread water).

How to Prepare

Classroom sessions are often held outdoors, so dress based on the weather for the day. It is a good idea to bring a jacket (even on warm days) because your body can cool off much more than expected after having been in the water for an extended period of time. Sunglasses and a hat are highly recommended for the classroom time, but should be removed before you get on the water.

Winging is a full-immersion sport, which means you will likely spend time in the water during this course. Bring swimwear, a towel, and a change of clothes to class each day. You may use an MBAC wetsuit for no additional charge while participating in this class. Lifejackets are required and provided.

Parking can be challenging at MBAC, especially during the summer or on nice weekends. Please visit our parking page for more information.

What's Next?

Once you are qualified to wing independently, you can rent equipment to build time on the water between lessons. That practice time helps solidify skills and makes each lesson more productive. It is typical that individuals require multiple private lessons. Your next private lesson will meet you wherever you are in your progression, often working toward using a foil board building speed. Private lessons foiling behind a boat are available for riders who want to feel what flying on a foil is like before doing it under wing power.
